’73 Bay Window

This 1973 VW Baywindow has come into the workshop for extensive welding and corrosion repair.

The bus has been acid dipped to strip away anything other than good metal. After stripping back panels we found there was lots or residue from the the acid dipping process. After speaking with the owner we have decided the best route will be top get the bus re-acid dipped and “E coated” after we have completed the welding and prior to prep and paint. This gets rid of the need to treat or paint any cavities or seams during the metalwork process

We have fitted an “early” front at the customers request which involves using early a pillar bottoms and associated parts

Front panel off to expose thin and corroded seams

Remove rotten deformation panel, cross member and wha’ts left of the a pillar bottoms

End of chassis rail thin and corroded

Remove rust

Before weld through primer

Customer wants the early look so early cross member and associated parts

Trial fit early bottom panel

Line up early bottom to be grafted onto new repro front panel

Minimal heat and distortion

Good penetration

Remove suface rust

Rust proof paint and weld through primer

It’s got a face again!

Cargo floor removed to gain access to replace cross members, outriggers and jacking points

A bit crusty!

Repair to bottom of chassis rail

Sliding door side sill trial fitted

N/S/F outrigger/jacking point in place

B pillar/inner wheel well repairs
